Raspberry Leaf - Organic - Herbal Tea

  • $1600

Recommended by naturopaths and midwives, Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus) is a classic uterine tonic that helps prepare the uterus for labour and birth.

It takes the prize for one of the most venerated - and safe - herbal uterine tonics.

It's been used in Europe for centuries, certainly as early as the 6th century.

These days it's estimated between 7% and 58% of pregnant women use raspberry leaf.

Research has found that the consumption of Raspberry leaf tea during pregnancy "may improve labour outcome and reduce the needs for medical intervention at birth."

Other studies have also reported "a decreased likelihood of pre- and post-term gestation, and fewer obstetric interventions including decreased caesarean section, forceps delivery and vacuum extraction in the group that had taken Raspberry leaf when compared with the control group."

Traditionally it was always taken as an infusion/tea so I tend to honour this method over the tablets.

It's also a nutritive herb rich in manganese, calcium, magnesium, iron, selenium, vitamin A, B complex, C and E.

What is it?

Raspberry leaf contains an alkaloid called fragarine. Studies have shown this acts directly on the smooth muscle of the uterus.

This action helps to prevent or reduce incoordinate uterine action - a common cause of difficulty and failure to progress in labour - by regulating the action of the uterine muscle.

I call raspberry leaf the great regulator.  It helps to prepare the uterus for an effective birth by relaxing over-tense muscles and toning over-relaxed muscles.

This in turn supports the uterus to contract effectively during labour.

It does not start labour or promote contractions; it strengthens the pelvic and uterine muscles so that once labour does start, it's more efficient.

When taken throughout pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester it's thought to help facilitate a safe, easy labour and prevent haemorrhage at birth. Yes please.

It can also be used during the postpartum period to help the with the involution of the uterus, after pains and support milk supply.
