Mama's Milk - Breastfeeding Herbal Tincture
Lots of new, and not so new breastfeeding mums often worry whether their baby is getting enough milk.
This herbal tincture contains galactagogue herbs to support a plentiful milk supply and herbs to bring calm to a windy or colicky baby. The perfect combo!
Of all of the Mama's Milk products, the herbal tincture is the most potent, followed by the herbal capsules then the herbal tea.
A herbal tincture is an alcohol base extraction of the herb. It gives a high potency preparation which means you don't need to take much to get the medicinal effect.
It has high absorbency and fast-acting properties. Given that only a very small/negligible amount of alcohol is consumed, it remains a very safe and effective way of using herbs. When taken as directed, this tincture is safe for breastfeeding mums.

What is it?
Breastmilk supply is dependent on many factors. But one way to help is with herbs.
Herbs that help boost milk supply are called galactogogues (ga-lac-ta-gogs).
This word hails from the mid 19th century, from Greek gala, galakt- ‘milk’ + agōgos ‘leading’.
Galactagogue herbs have a long history of use and are thought to work by increasing prolactin release. Prolactin is a woman’s main breastmilk producing hormone. It's released into the bloodstream in response to the sucking stimulus.
According to the Australian Breastfeeding Association, galactagogues work best when breastmilk is being removed frequently and effectively from a mother’s breasts. When all factors contributing to a low supply have been identified and addressed, then galactagogues may help to speed up the process.
This is a herbal tincture blend of herbs, as a 200ml or 500ml bottle.
The actions of the herbs in this blend are:
- Nutritive tonic
- Diuretic (gentle and safe variety)
Why Fenugreek free?
Taking Fenugreek may be an issue for some women who have PCOS, blood sugar problems, clotting problems or diabetes. Please use under the guidance of your GP in these circumstances.
Please select 'No Fenugreek Please' or see the 'Mama's Milk FF' (Fenugreek-free) Breastfeeding Herbal Capsules) for a great alternative!
Occasionally some mums have noticed that their baby is fussy and/or has green, watery stools when they are taking fenugreek, and that these symptoms go away they discontinue the fenugreek.
Fenugreek can cause some digestive in mums (upset stomach, diarrhoea), so it’s possible for it to cause tummy symptoms in baby too.
Another reason for these types of symptoms - and perhaps more likely than a reaction to the herb - is that mum's supply has increased due to the fenugreek and the symptoms are those of oversupply, where baby is getting too much foremilk. Fussiness, gas and green watery stools are classic symptoms of an overabundant milk supply. More info here.
