After you've birthed your baby and then your placenta, your uterus needs to adjust.  So it begins to work at contracting back down slowly to pre-pregnancy size. This is called involution. This process also helps curb postnatal blood loss from where the placenta was.

For mums, this can be felt as 'afterpains' or involution pains.

They begin around 12 hours after birth and are usually the strongest within the first 24-36 hours.

They typically continue for the first 72 hours but may linger a little for up to 5-7 days for some mums after the birth.

They are often worse during breastfeeding due to the release of the hormone oxytocin. As this has a direct effect on the uterus, making it contract.

Unfortunately, afterpains are particularly worse for women that have had more than one baby.

A herbal tincture is an alcohol based extraction of the herb. It gives a high potency preparation which means you don't need to take much to get the medicinal effect.

It has high absorbency and fast-acting properties. Given that only a very small/negligible amount of alcohol is consumed, it remains a very safe and effective way of using herbs.

When taken as directed, this tincture is safe to use after birth and whilst breastfeeding.

Can be used after either a vaginal or caesarean birth.

What's in it and why?

Contains liquid herbal extracts of: Viburnum prunifolium (Black Haw), Viburnum opulus (Cramp Bark), Leonurus cardiaca (Motherwort), Scutellaria lateriflora (Skullcap)

Why?

Black Haw: One of the best relaxant herbs for the smooth muscle of the uterus. Has both antispasmodic and gentle sedative properties.

Cramp Bark: From the same family as Black Haw (Caprifoliaceae), the name of this herb gives away its primary use! It helps ease tension and cramping within the uterine muscle.

Motherwort: Supports the body after birth, as the name suggests. Helps tone the uterus throughout involution, reduces blood loss and alleviates the intensity of after pains.

Skullcap: Included for its synergistic effect, this herb has nervine, antispasmodic and gentle sedative properties.
